The feature is being introduced globally, with a delayed rollout in the European Union to meet regional regulatory requirements, OpenAI said.
Why ChatGPT is predicting users’ age
OpenAI said the move is aimed at ensuring that teenagers have an age-appropriate experience on ChatGPT. Accounts identified as potentially belonging to users under 18 are placed under additional safety controls designed to limit exposure to sensitive or harmful content.
These measures are part of its broader commitment to online safety for younger users, it added.
How the ChatGPT age prediction system works
ChatGPT does not rely on a single factor to determine age. Instead, it analyses a range of account-linked signals, such as usage patterns, the types of topics discussed and the times at which the service is accessed, OpenAI said.
It acknowledged that the system is not flawless and that errors may occur, resulting in adults being incorrectly classified as under 18.

What changes for under-18 accounts
When an account is flagged as possibly belonging to a minor, ChatGPT activates extra safety settings.
While users can still ask questions, learn and create content, certain areas are handled more cautiously.
OpenAI said this includes topics involving graphic violence, sexual or violent role play, viral challenges that may encourage risky behaviour, and content promoting extreme beauty standards or unhealthy dieting.
How adults can verify their age
OpenAI clarified that age verification is optional. Users aged 18 or above who wish to remove the additional safety settings can verify their age through ChatGPT’s settings using a third-party service, Persona.
Depending on the country, verification may involve a live selfie, a government-issued ID, or both.

According to OpenAI, Persona would delete uploaded identification or selfies within seven days, and OpenAI itself would not receive these materials. The company only receives confirmation of age or date of birth, which it stores securely in line with its privacy policy, it said.
