The Case for Warren Beatty
Of all the contenders, Hollywood’s most famous leading man, Warren Beatty, was always the frontrunner. Beatty himself was convinced the entire song was about him. Simon has said that shortly after the song was released, he called her and said, “Thanks for the song.” His reputation as a charismatic womanizer certainly fit the profile. For decades, it remained unconfirmed speculation. Beatty's confidence, however, perfectly encapsulated the song's central irony: the subject was so vain, he was sure he was the star of the show.
The Mick Jagger and James Taylor Theories
Mick Jagger's involvement was more direct—he famously sang uncredited backup vocals on the track. His swagger made him an obvious candidate, but Simon has repeatedly and explicitly denied the song is about him. Another frequent guess was James Taylor, to whom Simon was married from 1972 to 1983. While their relationship was famously tumultuous and the subject of many of her other songs, Simon has also been clear that Taylor is not the man in “You’re So Vain.”
The Big Reveal… Sort Of
After more than 40 years of guarding her secret, Carly Simon finally offered a concrete answer in 2015 while promoting her memoir, “Boys in the Trees.” She confirmed that the song is indeed about three different men. And, as many had long suspected, one of them is Warren Beatty. Simon revealed to People magazine, “I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren.” That verse begins, “You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive,” and details a lover who made promises he couldn't keep. True to form, Simon added that Beatty “thinks the whole thing is about him!” The identities of the men from the first and third verses remain a secret she says she may never reveal, at least not publicly.
