100% cotton briefs in the ground, wait about two months, and then dig them up to see what’s left. While the headline’s "10,000 pairs" might be a cumulative figure rather than a single experiment, thousands of pairs have indeed been interred in gardens, farms, and fields worldwide. A major study in Switzerland alone involved over 2,000 pairs buried by 1,000 volunteers. This isn't for laughs; it's a quick, visual, and surprisingly effective way to gauge the biological activity happening just beneath our feet.
Why Cotton Briefs?
The choice of underwear isn't arbitrary, and it's not just about grabbing attention. The key is that the briefs must be made of 100% cotton. Cotton is a natural, plant-based fiber composed mostly of cellulose. The microscopic organisms that live in soil—bacteria, fungi, and other microbes—feast on organic material. In fact, a single teaspoon of healthy soil can contain billions of microbes. By burying a standardized piece of cotton, scientists can measure the voraciousness of these unseen ecosystems. A synthetic fabric like polyester wouldn't work, because microbes can't easily break it down. The cotton underwear serves as a perfect, standardized meal for the life forms in the soil.
A Report Card for Soil Health
After about 60 days, the exhumed underwear provides a clear, visual report card. If the underwear is retrieved mostly intact, it’s a sign of poor soil health. It means there's a low level of microbial activity, and the organisms aren’t numerous or active enough to decompose the cotton. But if the underwear comes back looking like a holy, tattered mess—or has almost completely vanished, leaving only the elastic waistband behind—that's cause for celebration. It demonstrates that the soil is teeming with life, actively breaking down organic matter and cycling nutrients. The more deteriorated the underwear, the healthier and more biologically active the soil.
From Farms to Your Backyard
This simple test is more than a scientific curiosity; it's a practical tool for land managers. Farmers and ranchers use the underwear test as a low-cost, low-tech alternative to expensive lab analyses to compare different parts of their property. They can see the effects of different management practices, such as no-till farming or the use of cover crops, which are designed to improve soil life. But it's not just for large-scale agriculture.
