1. Fire Rainbows
Despite the name, a fire rainbow has nothing to do with fire and isn't a rainbow. Officially called a circumhorizontal arc, this phenomenon is a vibrant band of colors that runs parallel to the horizon. It occurs when the sun is very high in the sky (more
than 58 degrees above the horizon) and its light passes through plate-shaped ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus clouds. The light refracts through the hexagonal crystals as if through a prism, creating a stunning, colorful smear across the sky that can look like a flame.
2. Lenticular Clouds
Often mistaken for UFOs, lenticular clouds are smooth, lens-shaped clouds that appear to hover in one spot, typically near mountains. They form when stable, moist air flows over a mountain range. As the air is forced upward, it cools and condenses into a cloud at the crest of the air wave. Because the cloud continuously forms on the upwind side and evaporates on the downwind side, it remains stationary even as strong winds blow through it, creating its signature otherworldly appearance.
3. Brinicles: The Icy Finger of Death
This haunting phenomenon happens beneath the sea ice in polar regions. A brinicle is a hollow, downward-growing tube of ice, like an underwater icicle. It forms when super-salty, extremely cold brine (salty water) leaks out of the sea ice above. This brine is denser and has a lower freezing point than the surrounding seawater. As it sinks, it freezes the less salty water it touches, creating an icy sheath around the descending plume. When this "icy finger of death" reaches the seafloor, it can spread, freezing and trapping slow-moving creatures like starfish and sea urchins.
4. Volcanic Lightning
As if a volcanic eruption weren't dramatic enough, some produce their own lightning storms, often called "dirty thunderstorms." This intense electrical display is generated within the massive plume of ash, rock fragments, and gas. There are two primary causes. Close to the vent, the violent collision and friction between ash particles generate enormous amounts of static electricity. Higher up in the plume, water vapor can freeze into ice crystals which then collide, creating charge separation just like in a regular thunderstorm.
5. Morning Glory Clouds
Best known in the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Australia, Morning Glory clouds are spectacular, rolling tube-shaped clouds that can be over 600 miles long. These rare formations are a type of solitary wave in the atmosphere, often occurring in a series. They form when moist, cool air gets trapped under a layer of warmer air, a phenomenon called a temperature inversion. The collision of sea breezes can create a wave that propagates along this inversion layer, with the rising air at the front of the wave forming the cloud. Glider pilots famously "surf" these waves for hundreds of miles.
6. Catatumbo Lightning
At the mouth of the Catatumbo River in Venezuela, a nearly perpetual thunderstorm rages. Occurring up to 160 nights a year for hours at a time, this phenomenon produces more lightning strikes per square kilometer than anywhere else on Earth. The unique local topography is the cause. Warm, moist winds from Lake Maracaibo and surrounding swamps are funneled by the high mountain ridges of the Andes that enclose the area on three sides. This lifts the air, creating the perfect conditions for the continuous generation of massive, lightning-producing storm clouds.
7. The Green Flash
Long the stuff of sailors' legends, the green flash is a real but very brief optical phenomenon seen at sunset or sunrise. Just as the last sliver of the sun disappears below the horizon (or the first sliver appears), it can momentarily turn a brilliant emerald green. This happens because the Earth's atmosphere acts like a weak prism, bending the sunlight and separating it into different colors. Shorter wavelengths like blue and green are bent more than longer ones like red and orange. For a fleeting second, after the red and orange have dipped below the horizon, only the green light is visible to the observer.
