The Sitting-Rising Test
This test measures your ability to get up from the floor, a fundamental movement that reflects your body's balance, flexibility, and muscle strength. To perform it, stand in a comfortable space and, without using your hands or any other support, lower
yourself into a seated position on the floor. Then, try to stand back up, again without assistance. The test is scored out of 10 points; you start with a perfect 10 and subtract one point each time you use a hand, knee, or forearm for support. A study in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that individuals with lower scores had a significantly higher risk of mortality over the study period. A score below 8 was associated with a notable increase in death rates, suggesting that difficulty with this basic movement could signal underlying issues with musculoskeletal fitness.
The Grip Strength Test
How firmly you can squeeze your hand is a powerful indicator of your overall body strength and has been consistently linked to longevity. Weaker grip strength is associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality, including from cardiovascular disease and cancer. This is because grip strength serves as a proxy for your overall muscle mass and health, which are crucial for metabolic function and resilience to illness. While a precise measurement requires a device called a dynamometer, you can get a general sense of your strength through everyday tasks. If you find opening jars, carrying heavy groceries, or holding onto a pull-up bar increasingly difficult, it might be a sign to focus on overall strength training. Studies have shown that for every 5-kilogram decrease in grip strength, there's an associated 16% higher risk of death from any cause.
The Walking Speed Test
Your natural walking pace can be a surprisingly accurate predictor of your future health. Often called the 'sixth vital sign' by geriatricians, gait speed reflects the health of multiple systems, including your cardiovascular, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems. Slower walking is linked to a higher risk of mortality, falls, and hospitalization. One large analysis published in JAMA found that faster walking speeds were consistently associated with longer survival in older adults. For example, 75-year-old men who walked the fastest had an 87% chance of living another 10 years, compared to only 19% for the slowest walkers. You can test yourself by measuring how long it takes to walk a set distance, like 10-20 feet, at your normal pace. A pace slower than about 2.6 feet per second is often considered a threshold for increased health risks.
The Push-Up Capacity Test
More than just a chest exercise, your ability to perform push-ups is a strong marker of upper-body strength and cardiovascular endurance. A 2019 study published in JAMA Network Open followed over 1,000 active, middle-aged male firefighters for a decade. The results were striking: men who could complete more than 40 push-ups had a 96% lower risk of experiencing a cardiovascular event, like a heart attack or stroke, compared to those who could do fewer than 10. Even completing 11 or more push-ups was associated with a significantly reduced risk. This is because push-ups engage multiple muscle groups, require core stability, and challenge your heart and lungs, making them an excellent all-in-one assessment of functional fitness.
