What's Happening?
Emirates has announced a ban on the use of electronic power banks on board its flights, effective from October 1. This decision follows concerns about the safety of lithium-ion battery devices, particularly after a fire incident involving an Airbus A321 at Gimhae. Passengers will be allowed to carry a single power bank, restricted to less than 100Wh, under specific conditions. The power banks must be stored in a bag under the seat or in the seat pocket, rather than in overhead lockers. Emirates already prohibits power banks in checked baggage.
Why It's Important?
The ban on power banks by Emirates highlights the growing concern over lithium battery-related incidents in the aviation industry. By implementing stricter regulations, Emirates aims to mitigate risks associated with power banks, which are considered to have a higher risk of overcharging compared to mobile phones. This move is part of a broader trend among airlines to enhance safety measures following incidents involving lithium battery devices. The new regulations are expected to significantly reduce risks and improve the ability of cabin crew to respond effectively in case of emergencies.
