Official Election Day Hours
For the general election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, polling places across Rhode Island will be open for a full 13 hours. Polls officially open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. This statewide schedule ensures most residents have ample time to vote before, during, or after the typical workday. There is one exception to this rule: the town of New Shoreham (Block Island), where polls open two hours later at 9:00 a.m. but still close at 8:00 p.m. Planning your trip to the polls within this window is the first step to a smooth voting experience.
If You're in Line When Polls Close
One of the most common questions voters have is what happens if they are still waiting in line when the clock strikes 8:00 p.m. The law in Rhode Island is clear and designed to protect your
right to vote: as long as you are physically in line at your polling place by 8:00 p.m., you will be allowed to cast your ballot. Poll workers are trained to ensure that everyone who arrived by the deadline gets to vote, so do not leave the line if you are still waiting at closing time.
What to Bring: Voter ID Requirements
Rhode Island has a voter photo ID law. When you arrive at your polling place, you will be asked to present a valid form of photo identification. Accepted forms of ID are numerous and include a Rhode Island driver's license, a U.S. passport, an ID issued by a U.S. educational institution, a U.S. military ID, a government-issued medical card, or a free Rhode Island voter ID card. The ID must be current or expired by no more than six months. If you do not have an acceptable photo ID, you will not be turned away. Instead, you can cast a provisional ballot. This ballot will be counted once election officials verify your eligibility by matching the signature on your ballot with the one on your voter registration record.
Before You Go: Confirm Your Polling Place
Even if you've voted in the same location for years, it's always a good practice to confirm your designated polling place before you head out. Locations can sometimes change between elections due to redistricting or other logistical reasons. The easiest way to find your correct polling location is by visiting the Rhode Island Secretary of State's Voter Information Center online at vote.sos.ri.gov. There, you can enter your information to find your specific polling place, view a sample ballot, and check that your registration is active and up to date.
Alternatives: Early and Mail-In Voting
If your schedule on Election Day is tight, Rhode Island offers convenient alternatives. Any registered voter can choose to vote early in person. This early voting period runs for 20 days before an election, beginning on October 14, 2026, and ending at 4:00 p.m. on November 2, the day before the election. You can cast your ballot at your local board of canvassers or another designated early voting site during their regular business hours. Additionally, any registered voter in Rhode Island is eligible to vote by mail without needing an excuse. You must apply for a mail ballot, and the completed ballot must be received by the Board of Elections by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
