What is the story about?

Election night brings a flood of numbers, but what do they mean? In Maryland, the story of who won isn't told all at once. Understanding the state's counting process is key to making sense of the results as they unfold. Here’s how it works.

The First Results After Polls Close

The first batch of results is typically released shortly after 8 p.m. EST, once the Maryland State Board of Elections confirms that every polling place in the state has closed. This initial wave is not from Election Day voting itself. Instead, it consists of votes cast during the early voting period and mail-in ballots that local election boards received and processed before Election Day. State law allows local officials to begin canvassing mail-in ballots well before the election—starting as early as October 13, 2026, for the general election—but these totals are kept sealed and are not made public until polls are closed. This first release can sometimes show large, but potentially misleading, leads for certain candidates depending on the demographics

of early and mail-in voters.

The Flow of Election Day Precinct Votes

Throughout the night, typically between 10 p.m. and midnight, larger batches of results begin to pour in from in-person voting at precincts across the state. These numbers are added to the running totals published by the State Board of Elections. The frequency of these updates isn't on a fixed schedule; it depends on how quickly individual counties can tally their votes and report them to the state. This is often the period when the clearest picture of most races begins to emerge, as the high volume of Election Day votes gets incorporated. However, these are still considered unofficial results, as not all votes have been counted.

The Long Count: Mail-In and Provisional Ballots

The counting process doesn't stop when election night ends. In the days that follow, local election boards continue to count mail-in ballots. Ballots postmarked by Election Day can still be counted if they are received by 10 a.m. on the second Friday after the election. As these ballots are processed, local boards release updated tallies, which can cause vote totals to shift, sometimes significantly, in close races. Additionally, officials begin counting provisional ballots on the second Wednesday after the election. These are ballots cast by voters whose eligibility couldn't be confirmed at the polls, and they are counted once the voter's eligibility is verified. These updates continue until all valid ballots have been accounted for.

From Unofficial Totals to Certified Results

All the numbers released on election night and in the immediate days after are unofficial. The process becomes official through certification. Each of Maryland's local boards of elections must canvass and certify their county's results by the second Friday after Election Day, or within 48 hours of completing their count if it runs longer. After the local certifications are complete, the Board of State Canvassers convenes to review and certify the final, official statewide results. This board, which includes top state officials like the Secretary of State and Attorney General, must meet within 30 days of the election to make the outcome official. Only then are the results truly final, and candidates are formally declared winners.
