Standard Election Day Hours
On Election Day, which falls on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, for the general election, polling places across New Mexico are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mountain Time. An important rule to remember is that if you are in line by 7 p.m., you are legally allowed to stay and cast your vote, so don't leave if the clock strikes seven and you're still waiting. This ensures that everyone who shows up on time gets the chance to participate. Polling locations are determined by your county, and you can find your designated spot by visiting the New Mexico Secretary of State's voter information portal or contacting your county clerk's office directly.
Take Advantage of Early Voting
For those who prefer to avoid the Election Day rush, New Mexico offers a generous early voting window. In-person
early voting typically begins 28 days before the election at your local county clerk's office during their regular business hours. Then, starting on the third Saturday before the election, additional 'expanded' early voting locations open up. These sites often have more flexible schedules, including evening and Saturday hours, to accommodate different work schedules. Early voting ends on the Saturday before Election Day, giving you plenty of time to find a convenient opportunity to cast your ballot. Hours and specific locations for expanded early voting vary by county, so it's always best to check with your county clerk for the most accurate information.
Registering to Vote in New Mexico
One of New Mexico’s most convenient features is same-day voter registration. This means eligible citizens can register to vote or update their existing registration and then cast a ballot all in one visit. This option is available at your county clerk’s office during the early voting period and at any polling place in your county on Election Day itself. While standard online and mail-in registration closes 28 days before an election, same-day registration provides a crucial safety net for those who miss the deadline. To use same-day registration, you will need to provide proof of identity and residency.
What to Bring to the Polls
For most registered voters in New Mexico, no identification is required to vote in person. However, there are a few exceptions. If you are voting for the first time, registered by mail, and did not provide identification with your registration form, you will need to show some form of ID. Accepted forms include a current photo ID or a document like a recent utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck that shows your name and address. Identification is also required if you are using same-day registration. In that case, you'll need an ID issued by a government or educational institution with your name and photo, plus a document dated within 90 days that shows your current address.
Voting by Mail (Absentee)
Any registered voter in New Mexico can choose to vote by mail without needing a specific reason. To do so, you must first request an absentee ballot. Your application must be received by your county clerk no later than 14 days before the election. You can apply online via the state's voter portal, or by submitting a paper application. Once you receive your ballot, be sure to follow the instructions carefully. Your completed ballot must be received by the county clerk by 7 p.m. on Election Day to be counted. While you can mail it back, officials often recommend mailing it at least a week before Election Day to ensure it arrives on time. Alternatively, you can drop it off in person at your county clerk's office or any polling location on Election Day.
