Election Day: Standard Hours
For voters who prefer the traditional experience of voting on Election Day, polls across Maryland are open for a 13-hour window. On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, all assigned polling places will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. This provides a wide range of time for citizens to vote before or after typical work hours. To ensure the smoothest experience, election officials often suggest that the best times to vote are between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when lines tend to be shorter. On Election Day, you must vote at your specifically assigned polling place.
What If Iām in Line When Polls Close?
Don't worry if you're standing in a long line as 8 p.m. approaches. Maryland state law ensures that any voter who is in line by the 8 p.m. closing time will be allowed to cast their ballot. Election
workers will mark the end of the line at 8 p.m. to ensure that only those who arrived on time are able to vote. So, as long as you have queued up by the deadline, you have the right to vote, no matter how long it takes to get to the front.
Early Voting: A Flexible Option
For those who want to avoid the Election Day rush, Maryland offers a generous early voting period. For the 2026 Gubernatorial General Election, early voting centers will be open from Thursday, October 22, 2026, through Thursday, October 29, 2026. This eight-day period includes the weekend, offering additional flexibility. Like on Election Day, the hours for all early voting centers are from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. A key advantage of early voting is that you can cast your ballot at any early voting center within the county where you are registered to live. This is different from Election Day, where you are restricted to a single, assigned location.
Finding Your Polling Place
Knowing when to vote is only half the battle; you also need to know where to go. The Maryland State Board of Elections provides an online Voter Look-Up tool that allows residents to verify their registration and find their assigned polling place for Election Day. It is important to note that early voting centers are often located at different sites than your standard Election Day polling place, so be sure to confirm the correct location for the day you plan to vote. Lists of early voting centers are made available on county websites and through the State Board of Elections.
Do I Need to Bring an ID?
In most cases, voters in Maryland are not required to show a photo ID to vote. However, there are a few exceptions. If you registered to vote by mail and did not provide identification at that time, you will be asked to show a valid ID the first time you vote in a federal election. Accepted forms of ID in this case include a Maryland driver's license, a state-issued ID card, a passport, or a current utility bill, bank statement, or government document that shows your name and address. Additionally, Maryland offers same-day registration during early voting and on Election Day, which requires bringing a document that proves where you live.
Other Ways to Vote
If voting in person doesn't fit your schedule, all registered Maryland voters are eligible to vote by mail. To do this, you must first request a mail-in ballot from the State Board of Elections or your local board. Once you receive and complete your ballot, you can return it by mail or by dropping it off at a designated ballot drop box. To be counted, mailed ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day, November 3, 2026. Ballots returned to a drop box must be deposited by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
