What Montana Publishes on Election Night, and How Often

On election night, the nation holds its breath, waiting for results to trickle in. But every state has its own rhythm, and Montana is no exception. Understanding its unique process can help you follow the count like a seasoned political observer.

When the First Results Appear

The first batch of results from Montana typically doesn't arrive the second polls close at 8:00 p.m. Mountain Time. Under state law, counties can't release any vote totals until they get confirmation that every voter who was in line at 8:00 p.m. has cast their ballot. In high-turnout presidential elections, long lines for same-day voter registration can mean the first numbers don't post until late in the evening, sometimes hours after polls have officially closed. Once those lines are cleared, the first results to be published are usually the mail-in absentee ballots. Because Montana allows counties to begin processing and even tabulating these ballots before Election Day, they are often ready to be released in a large, early batch. In previous

elections, the first results from the Associated Press have been reported around 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Cadence of the Count

After the initial release of absentee votes, the pace of reporting can vary. A state law requires that once vote tabulation begins, it must continue 'without adjournment' until all available ballots are counted. Furthermore, after a county releases its first results, it must provide updated numbers at least every three hours. This ensures a steady, if not rapid, flow of information throughout the night and into the next morning. The official source for these updates is the Montana Secretary of State's Election Night Reporting website. News organizations like the Associated Press also have reporters at county election offices and may report results from printed totals slightly faster than they appear on the state's official online dashboard.

Decoding the Data You See

The numbers released on election night come from two main sources: absentee ballots and in-person votes cast on Election Day. Since a significant portion of Montanans vote by mail, the first large wave of results is composed of these absentee ballots. In some counties, this initial release can represent a substantial part of the total vote. As the night progresses, precincts begin reporting the results from in-person voting, which are added to the totals. It’s important to remember this sequence; depending on the voting patterns of absentee versus in-person voters, the leaderboard in a given race can shift as different types of votes are added to the count. Not included in these initial totals are write-in votes, which are tallied later, or provisional ballots. Provisional ballots are set aside for voters whose eligibility needs to be confirmed, and they are counted days after the election.

Geography, Logistics, and Finality

Montana is a large, geographically diverse state, and the speed of the count can differ significantly between its 56 counties. More populous counties like Gallatin and Missoula may have more ballots to count and potentially longer lines at the polls, which can delay their initial reporting. In contrast, smaller, rural counties may be able to report their complete results more quickly. While a very high percentage of the total vote—often over 90%—is typically reported by noon the day after the election, the final, official result takes much longer. After Election Day, counties must still count valid provisional ballots and perform a legally required post-election audit, which involves hand-counting randomly selected races to verify the machine tabulation. The results aren't certified as official by the Secretary of State until these processes are complete, which can be weeks later.
