Election Day Polling Hours
For the statewide general election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, polls across Massachusetts will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. As long as you are in line at your designated polling place by 8 p.m., you will be permitted to vote. While these are the standard hours for state elections, some municipalities may choose to open polls as early as 5:45 a.m. It's always a good idea to check with your local election office for the exact hours in your specific town or city, especially for local elections where times can vary more significantly.
In-Person Early Voting Period
If you want to avoid the lines on Election Day, Massachusetts offers a generous in-person early voting period. For the 2026 general election, early voting runs from Saturday, October 17, through Friday, October 30.
This window includes two full weekends to provide ample opportunity for voters. Unlike Election Day, you are not tied to a single polling place; you can vote at any early voting location within your city or town. Local election officials set the specific hours and locations for early voting, which will be posted on the state's voter information website by October 10.
Key Deadlines to Remember
To participate in the November 3 election, you must be registered to vote by the deadline. The last day to register is Saturday, October 24, 2026. You can register online until 11:59 p.m., in person until 5 p.m., or by mail with a form postmarked by October 24. Massachusetts does not offer same-day voter registration. For those preferring to vote by mail, your application must be received by your local election office by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27. It is highly recommended to apply much earlier, especially if you plan to return your ballot by mail.
Finding Your Polling Place
On Election Day, you must vote at your assigned polling place, which is determined by your residential address. If you're unsure where that is, the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth provides an online tool to look up your polling location and confirm your registration status. You can find this by visiting the official state elections website. For early voting, you have the flexibility to use any early voting center in your community.
Do You Need to Bring ID?
In most cases, you do not need to show identification to vote in Massachusetts. However, there are a few exceptions. You may be asked for ID if you are voting for the first first time in the state, you are listed as an inactive voter, you are casting a provisional ballot, or if a poll worker has a specific reason to ask. Acceptable forms of ID do not need to be photo IDs; they just need to show your name and address. Examples include a driver's license, a recent utility bill, a state ID card, or a rent receipt.
