Standard Statewide Polling Hours
On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, polling places across Alaska are open for a consistent 13-hour window. Polls officially open at 7:00 AM and close at 8:00 PM local time. This statewide schedule is designed to provide ample opportunity for all registered voters to cast their ballots in person. Whether you live in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or a more remote community, you can count on this standard timeframe. The key, however, is understanding what 'local time' means in a state that spans two different time zones.
Alaska's Unique Two-Time-Zone System
Here's where voting in Alaska gets interesting. The vast majority of the state operates on Alaska Time. However, the westernmost portion of the Aleutian Islands observes Hawaii-Aleutian Time, which is one hour behind. Despite this
difference, all polls in Alaska close at the exact same moment. This means that while polls in the Alaska Time Zone close at 8:00 PM, polls in the sliver of the state in the Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone close at 7:00 PM their local time. This synchronized closing ensures that no election results are reported from one part of the state before voting has concluded everywhere else. All electronically transmitted ballots must also be received by 8:00 PM Alaska Time on Election Day.
What If You're in Line at Closing Time?
This is a critical piece of information for every voter: if you are in line at your polling place by 8:00 PM, you have the legal right to vote. Do not leave if you see the clock strike eight and there are still people ahead of you. Election workers are required to allow every voter who was in line at the official closing time to cast their ballot. So, even if you arrive just before the deadline, stay put. Your vote will be counted.
What to Bring to the Polls
Alaska law requires voters to show identification to vote, but the rules are flexible if an election official personally knows you. To be safe, it's always best to bring ID. Acceptable forms of photo identification include a current driver's license, state ID, or passport. However, you can also use non-photo identification, such as a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and current address. Having one of these documents ready will help ensure a smooth and quick check-in process at your polling location.
Other Ways to Cast Your Ballot
Can't make it to the polls on Election Day? Alaska offers several convenient options. The state has 'no-excuse' absentee and early voting, meaning any registered voter can take advantage of them. Early in-person voting begins 15 days before the election, on October 19, 2026, and runs through November 2. Locations for early and absentee-in-person voting are available at various sites, including regional elections offices, city halls, and other designated community buildings, though hours may vary by location. You can also apply to vote by mail. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is typically 10 days before the election, which would be October 24, 2026. Your voted ballot must be postmarked by Election Day.
