World No. 9 Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the Ningbo Open due to a persistent left thigh/quad and hip injury and ended her season early, dashing her hopes of qualifying for the WTA Finals at Indian Wells next month.
Swiatek’s recent struggles were on display at last week’s Wuhan Open, where she suffered a semifinal defeat at the hands of rising star Maja Chwalin. Chwalin capitalized on her momentum, capturing her maiden career title by defeating Sonay Kartal in the final.
Shortly after announcing her withdrawal from the Ningbo Open, Swiatek took to social media to explain her decision to end her season to prioritize rest and recovery. As a result, she will miss the WTA Finals.
"This has been one of the most demanding seasons of my career, with
a lot of challenges, changes and lessons along the way," Swiatek said in a statement posted on social media Tuesday, Oct. 20. "I’ve decided to end my season here, which means I won’t be playing any more tournaments this year."
With Swiatek sidelined, fellow contenders Karolina Muchova and Marta Kostyuk are locked in an intense battle for the final spot in the eight-player singles field at the WTA Finals.
The WTA Finals serves as the season-ending championship and features the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams of the year. The 2026 edition will take place Nov. 8-15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California.
