Week 6 kicks off with a heavyweight matchup between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, and both teams have a little something to prove.
Sitting at 3-2, each entered the season with Super Bowl
aspirations. Five weeks in, neither has exactly been playing like a team ready to book its trip to the big game. There's plenty of time to turn things around, but Thursday night offers a pretty good place to start. The defending champion Seahawks have been plagued by turnovers, an issue that has threatened to derail their title defense. Fortunately for Seattle, Mike Macdonald's defense remains a formidable group capable of bailing out the offense. Denver, meanwhile, could use a little saving of its own.
Head coach Sean Payton hasreclaimed play-calling
duties after initially handing the reins to offensive coordinator Davis Webb. Bo Nix and the Broncos' offense have struggled to find their rhythm, prompting Payton to make the change in hopes of getting the unit back on track. Denver came one win shy of representing the AFC in last season's Super Bowl against Seattle, so there's no shortage of motivation to prove the team still belongs in the contender conversation. Unfortunately, Macdonald's defense isn't exactly the get-right matchup Denver ordered.
Seattle, meanwhile, enters Thursday night hoping to bounce back from its Week 5 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba tweaked his ankle late in that contest, making his status worth monitoring. After all, Seattle hasn't lost back-to-back games since Weeks 15 and 16 of the 2024 season, before Sam Darnold arrived. Can the defending champs keep that streak alive, or will Denver send them into a mini crisis?
Both teams will also sport throwback uniforms Thursday night, meaning the game should look good even if the offenses occasionally don't.
