The San Francisco 49ers continue to make headlines for the wrong reasons this offseason.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan was injured in a car accident in July, multiple key players have sustained injuries in training camp, and now team owner Jed York has been arrested.
York was arrested in East Palestine, Ohio, on Sunday, Aug. 23, having allegedly "arranged to have sexual activity" with a woman "in exchange for $140." The 49ers' owner responded to a post made by an agent of the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force (MVHTTF) on a known prostitution website, according to Columbiana County (Ohio) court records.
York has since reached a plea deal that reduced the charges of "engaging in prostitution" – a misdemeanor – to disorderly conduct misdemeanor charges.
He also pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of possessing criminal tools.

Jed York arrest details
According to court records obtained by USA TODAY Sports, York responded to a post on a known prostitution website that was created by an officer of the MVHTTF in coordination with the police department in East Palestine, Ohio. The 49ers' owner coordinated a meet-up for the morning of Sunday, Aug. 23 in East Palestine, allegedly agreeing to pay $140 for sex.
York was arrested when he arrived. The cell phone he allegedly used to coordinate the meeting, as well as $160 he had on hand, was seized at the scene.
York reached a plea deal to reduce his misdemeanor "engaging in prostitution" charges to misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges and pleaded no contest to a charge of possessing criminal tools, according to the court documents. The 49ers' team owner was sentenced to one day in jail for both charges, which he was permitted to serve concurrently. He also paid $1,150 in fines as part of his plea deal and surrendered the $160 he had on hand to the MVHTTF. York's cell phone was returned to him.
After his arrest, York requested to seal the records of the case. His motion was denied by a judge.
How did Jed York get his money
York officially became the principal owner of the 49ers in 2024, but he had been involved with the team for over a decade before that.
York's parents became owners of the 49ers when former team owner and Pro Football Hall of Famer Eddie DeBartolo Jr. gave control of the team to his sister – Jed York's mother, Denise DeBartolo York – and his brother-in-law – Jed York's father, John York. DeBartolo was the Niners' principal owner during all five of the team's Super Bowl wins,but legal troubles led to his departure from the fellowship of the league's team owners.
DeBartolo pleaded guilty to a failure report a felony charge in 1998 after former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards allegedly attempted to extort him. The NFL fined the then-Niners owner for $1 million and suspended him for the 1999 season. DeBartolo York, Jed York's mother, took control of the team in 1999 after DeBartolo stepped away and assumed full ownership with her husband, John, in 2000 after a legal battle between the siblings – DeBartolo and DeBartolo York.
Jed York, the current owner of the 49ers, joined the family business of helping run the 49ers shortly after he graduated college. In 2008, he was named CEO of the team at 28 years old, taking on day-to-day operations as team president while his parents moved on to co-chair roles. Sixteen years later, in 2024, York bought controlling stake of the team from his mother to officially become principal owner of the 49ers.

York is 46 years old. He is no longer the youngest principal owner in the NFL. Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon, who took over the Colts in 2025 after her father's death, is younger.

Tony York death
York's brother, Tony, died in 2018, the team announced in a statement at the time. He was 35 years old. The 49ers did not announce a cause of death in their statement.
