The NFL's weekend mystery is no more.
Marvin Harrison Jr.'s trade destination has been revealed. The embattled Arizona Cardinals wide receiver is headed to the Houston Texans.
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans broke the news at the end of his news conference Sunday following a 26-3 win over the Tennessee Titans.
“You guys want to know, huh? Yes, we traded for Marvin Harrison," Ryans said before walking off.
ESPN's Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport confirmed that the Cardinals were trading Harrison and a seventh-round draft pick to the Texans in exchange for second- and sixth-round selections.
The move brings closure to one of the most bizarre stories of the past week, while also wrapping up one of the more confounding tenures for a highly-hyped rookie in recent
years. From questions about his role within first-year Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur's attack to concerns about his effort and intensity this season, Harrison quickly became a non-factor in Arizona, recording just five catches for 85 yards in four games.
Who made out best in the deal? Here are our grades for each team:
Texans trade grade: D
It's natural for teams to see a highly-drafted player struggle in the early going and assume they can fix him.
Yet everything about the track record for such projects suggests Houston's latest play is a clear act of hubris – and one highly unlikely to pan out.
It's hard to square the supposed can't-miss prospect Harrison amounted to as the No. 4 overall pick with the undeniable miss that he was in Arizona. The two-time unanimous All-American is a far cry from what he was at Ohio State, when he won by creating consistent separation against defenders and snagging tight-quarter throws with his superlative tracking and body control.
At the pro level, the skill set hasn't translated whatsoever. Breaking free of coverage has been a consistent chore, and the 6-3, 220-pounder isn't the contested catch asset his size might indicate he is.
Is there an opportunity for a rebirth in Houston? On first blush, it might seem so. The Texans only need a No. 2 option to take pressure off Nico Collins. Given offensive coordinator Nick Caley's scheme and C.J. Stroud's comfort zone, Harrison's ability to win on horizontally breaking routes could be rediscovered.
But the Texans essentially appear to be doubling down on their existing approach. Harrison is a far less effective version of what Jayden Higgins was prior to the receiver suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in August. He surely won't alter the outlook of a running game that remains completely inert, nor should he be expected to provide significant relief for Stroud amid an overall shortage of playmaking assistance.
Above all, though, there's no justification to give up this kind of draft capital for Harrison off based off his performance in two-plus years. A resurgence for Houston isn't entirely unreasonable given how the schedule sets up and how much talent is still on the roster. But the whiff of desperation here is undeniable.
Cardinals trade grade: A-
It might be difficult to find a silver lining to yet another top pick going awry for Arizona.
Under Monti Ossenfort, the Cardinals' track record in the draft has been nothing short of atrocious in recent years. Harrison, a billed as an instant solution for any offense, was supposed to help alleviate that issue. Instead, the organization is now dealing him away for what might seem like pennies on the dollar.
But such a valuation would essentially be a sunk-cost fallacy.
A fresh start under LaFleur only seemed to widen the chasm of what's expected of Harrison and what he actually offers the offense. With tight end Trey McBride and wideout Michael Wilson proving more than capable of being the focal points for the attack, LaFleur and quarterback Jacoby Brissett shrugged off any notion of feeding Harrison the ball more.
If Arizona had held on for much longer, it might have seen its investment on Harrison hit close to zero.
With Wilson having joined McBride in signing a lucrative extension, the Cardinals can continue to look ahead toward a wider transformation in 2027. Beyond the massive war chest of cap space and potential for an early quarterback pick, a roster short on true difference-makers can get more support on Day 2.
