Elon Musk's political committee disclosed $800,000 in spending on the midterm elections last month as the world's richest man targets key races in the battle for control of Congress.
Musk was the largest donor of the 2024 election cycle, plowing $290 million into the effort to help elect President Donald Trump and other Republicans. His America PAC has signaled that it will play a major role in the midterms helping GOP candidates.
America PAC pumped money into battleground Senate contests in August, including races in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Maine, New Hampshire Texas and Alaska. The committee also targeted a number of key House contests, according to a Sept. 2 filing with the Federal Election Commission. All of the $800,000 was spent on "printing,"
suggesting the PAC is paying for mailers sent to voters. The committee also has spent money on digital ads in Senate battlegrounds, according to NBC News.
After spending big to help Trump get elected, Musk told Bloomberg News last year that he planned to scale back. "I think in terms of political spending, I'm going to do a lot less in the future," Musk said. "I think I've done enough."
Yet Musk subsequently indicated he is preparing to spend at least $100 million on the midterm elections, according to reports in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. He became the world's first trillionaire this year when his company SpaceX went public.
America PAC spokesman Andrew Romeo told Axios in July that "the president's political team and the rest of the GOP apparatus have built a top-notch operation that will put Republicans in a strong position to buck history and retain control of Congress this fall, and we're excited to again be part of the team."
Musk joined the Trump administration after the president's election and was one of the president's closest advisers as he led the Department of Government Efficiency. The pair had a dramatic falling out, but havesince reconciled.
