She gave her mom a part of her liver. Now, they’re about to find out if it gave her a second chance at life.
When Susan Lower was diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer that had spread to her liver, it shocked everyone who knew and loved her. For four years, she underwent chemotherapy, radiation and major colorectal surgeries.
Then Susan learned that a liver transplant could be an option.
“We were so grateful,” said her daughter Emily “Emmie” Miller. “We also knew that finding the right match wouldn’t be easy.”
Family members and friends stepped up to see if they could be donors. Eventually, Susan’s daughter Maddie was found to be a perfect match.
“The second she knew she was a match, she was all in,” Emmie said. “She understood exactly what the
surgery would involve and the risks that came with it, but none of that changed her mind. She just wanted to give our mom a second chance at life.”
After Susan received the transplant at Cleveland Clinic, the Florida family stayed nearby for several weeks as she recovered.
Now, Susan and her husband are about to share whether the cancer is gone.
