College football rankings after Week 1: Updated US LBM Coaches Poll, AP Top 25

There was no need to wait for college football's ramp-up of chaos.

The football gods pushed all their chips to the middle of the table in Week 1, producing a weekend filled with chaos and controversy that continued a long offseason's theme for the sport. And that doesn't even mention some video-game-like performances from some of the nation's top players.

The most controversial Week 1 finish came from Michigan's narrow escape against Western Michigan in Ann Arbor. After Bryce Underwood's initial Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete as time expired, officials restored one second to the clock, giving the Wolverines one final snap. Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan

for a game-winning 47-yard touchdown.

Elsewhere, Lane Kiffin led an LSU team without pro players to a 51-10 drubbing of Clemson. Sam Leavitt threw for 230 yards and a touchdown while adding 113 yards and two scores on the ground in his first start after transferring from Arizona State. LSU's win was part of a perfect 16-0 week for the SEC, although Ole Miss narrowly avoided an upset against Louisville, needing a game-winning field goal as time expired for the 41-38 win.

In the ACC, Miami receiver Malachi Toney broke out the Heisman Trophy pose several times in the Hurricanes' commanding 45-6 win over Stanford, finishing with 234 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback play was strong on Friday night between Miami's Darian Mensah and Southern California's Jayden Maiava, as they combined to throw for 750 yards and eight touchdown passes.
