A 27-year-old woman and a 5-month-old baby died after a boat capsized in New York Harbor on Aug. 8, the New York City Police Department said.
Authorities responded to calls of an overturned boat near Liberty Island just before 11 p.m. ET, according to police. The response teams included a scuba and an aviation unit.
At the scene, authorities rescued 12 people from the water, according to the New York City Fire Department. They were transported to nearby hospitals with minor injuries.
The woman and infant child were taken to NYU Language Health Brooklyn, where they were pronounced dead, the police department said. It's unclear whether they were related.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation, officials said.
