Canelo Alvarez will step into the ring against Christian Mbilli for their super middleweight title Saturday, Oct. 31, after deliberate decision-making.
Alvarez has said he wanted to fight a champion, and Mbilli holds the WBC super middleweight title. But Alvarez’s choice in opponents – the first since he lost to Terence Crawford in September 2025 -- goes beyond that.
Mbilli’s aggressive style appears to be tailor-made for Alvarez’s counter-punching approach.
But Mbilli, at 31, might expose the 36-year-old as an aging legend who’s closer to retirement than he realizes.
Alvarez looked slow and flustered when he lost to Crawford by unanimous decision. In his previous fight, Alvarez looked frustrated as William Scull stayed on the move.
Alvarez landed
a measly 56 punches in the 12-round fight. Against Mbilli, can he recapture what made him the face of boxing for years? Or is he at serious risk of suffering another defeat?
