Washington DC's skies have had some high-profile visitors lately.
From fighter jets to some of the Air Force's largest bombers, military aircraft have made several prominent appearances over the nation's capital in recent weeks.
The activity has included flyovers connected to major events and ceremonies, including Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit last week.
Two B-1B bombers flew over Joint Base Andrews on Sept. 23 as Xi arrived. The following day, a B-2 bomber and four F-22 Raptors flew over the White House during his formal welcome ceremony.
The summer's Freedom 250 events — including the Great American State Fair and Freedom 250 Grand Prix — also featured a large collection of military aircraft, such as B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers, F-22s,
F-35s and F/A-18s.
What is bringing military aircraft to Washington DC skies?
Military flyovers aren't unusual in Washington DC, particularly around ceremonies and major events.
In fact, the U.S. military conducted flyovers over Arlington National Cemetery as recently as Monday. The day before, planes flew over Northwest Stadium just outside DC before the Washington Commanders' first home game of the season.
Presidential ceremonies, state visits, military events and funerals at Arlington National Cemetery can all feature military aircraft.
This year has provided several additional opportunities for the flyovers, including celebrations marking the nation's 250th anniversary and visits from foreign leaders.
The Air & Space Forces Magazine noted that flyovers are common during state visits. Four F-35s, for example, flew over the White House during King Charles III's state visit earlier this year.
So while the recent flyovers have drawn attention, military aircraft have long been part of the Washington DC soundscape.
