For the Pittsburgh Steelers, their NFL Week 7 matchup with the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 25 outside Paris is about more than becoming the first team in the league to win a regular-season game on French soil.
It would be a nice feather in their proverbial cap, but the AFC North standings don't really afford them the luxury of symbolic motivation. Practically speaking, first-year coach Mike McCarthy and Co. need this one to stay out of a hole in what's become the most competitive division in football.
The Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens are all 4-2. The Cincinnati Bengals trail only because they were idle in Week 6 at 3-2. If the Steelers become the next team to lose because of their 9:30 a.m. kickoff time, they'll be chasing not
one, not two, but three teams immediately.
Their opponent, meanwhile, is one they should beat. New Orleans is 2-4 and is last in points allowed per game at 29.7. On paper, they look like the perfect mark for quarterback Aaron Rodgers and an offense that has averaged 28.5 points over its past four games.
International games tend to have a flavor of unpredictability, though, which adds a layer of anxiety as Week 8's matchup with the Browns, who already beat the Steelers in Week 4, awaits back at Acrisure Stadium.
The stakes therefore feel higher than they maybe should be with two-thirds of the season remaining. If everyone else in the division remains hot, a loss could quickly leave a team that's riding high with wins of three of its past four playing a constant game of catch-up with multiple rivals.
