Following years of criticism over Christopher Columbus' treatment of Native Americans, former President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation for Indigenous Peoples' Day in 2021, on the same date as Columbus Day. While not recognized as a federal holiday, it is recognized as a holiday in some cities and states.

All post offices will be closed for retail transactions, and there will be no regular residential or business mail deliveries on Monday, Oct. 12, according to the U.S. Postal Service's website.

Since Columbus Day is a federal holiday, most branches of national banks such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo and CitiBank, among others, will be closed on Oct. 12. It is always a good idea to check with your local bank branch for specific holiday hours.
ATMs and online banking remain available; however, transactions or deposits may not process until the next business day.
