Spoiler alert! The following contains spoilers for Season 4 of "The Diplomat" on Netflix.
Where do Kate and Hal Wyler go from here?
At the end of Season 4 of Netflix's "The Diplomat"
(now streaming), political couple Kate and Hal (Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell) have been brought to their personal and professional brinks amid the administration of President Grace Penn (Allison Janney), who is making geopolitical decisions that Kate and Hal cannot morally get behind. In the final moments of the Season 4 finale, Kate and Hal, and several other characters, publicly resign from Penn's administration. But we've yet to see the consequences.

That will have to happen in a potential fifth season of the Emmy-winning show. As fans finish up binge-watching the dramatic
and twist-filled fourth season, it's time to start thinking about what might happen next.
Here's everything we know about a potential Season 5 of Netflix's "The Diplomat."
Will there be a Season 5 of 'The Diplomat'?
As of publish time, Netflix has not officially renewed "The Diplomat" for any future seasons, but they also have not made any announcements suggesting the show has been canceled. Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford were mum on the status to USA TODAY in recent interviews.
When will 'The Diplomat' Season 5 premiere if it gets one?
"The Diplomat" has returned to Netflix for its first four seasons with surprisingly nice regularity. Its first season debuted in spring of 2023 but Seasons 2-4 have all bowed on Netflix in the fall of subsequent years. If the series is renewed, expect it to likely return in the fall of 2027, and possibly later depending on production schedules.

How does 'The Diplomat' Season 4 end?
At the conclusion of Season 4, our protagonist Kate Wyler (Russell) was in direct conflict with President Grace Penn (Janney) after the president started making questionable decisions with global consequences. Kate disagreed with Penn's choice to threaten to essentially invade U.K. territorial waters to prevent the Russians from finding out the U.S. had stolen a doomsday nuclear weapon right out from under the Kremlin's nose.
Kate thinks that could cause the end of traditional Western alliances including NATO, not to mention threaten World War III with Russia. Kate's second-in-command, Stuart Heyford (Ato Essandoh) agreed with her, and wrote an official "dissent cable" protesting the president's actions.
Penn, in a take-no-prisoners mood, has Stuart effectively fired, making Kate realize she has to choose loyalty or morality. She, very publicly, decides to take a stand and resigns from Penn's administration. She's followed by a number of other high profile figures, including chief-of-staff Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah), Secretary of State Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval), and − most importantly − her husband Hal Wyler (Sewell), who just happens to be Vice President of the United States.

What will Season 5 of 'The Diplomat' be about?
So what happens next? USA TODAY asked Russell and Sewell, and they say they're as clueless as the rest of us.
"We do not have any insight yet," Russell says. "We are totally in the dark, just like you guys. We love it. We've done four seasons now, and I've never been disappointed. So if we were to get another season, I would never want to put my finger on the scale, because it's been so good so far. I wouldn't wanna mess with anything."
"Nothing can disappoint us," Sewell added. "[The writers] could throw anything at us. Whether [Kate and Hal] are apart or together, whether we're out, in power, out of power, whatever! Bring it. Bring it on."
