Who says only hoomans can have all the fun?
Chanel the chihuahua, got the birthday of her doggy dreams when her owner, Ericka Islas, threw her a quinceañera this month at her Denver home, complete with a tiara and a pink tutu. Chanel turned 2.
"The idea of throwing such an elaborate party for a chihuahua was a fun, crazy, and ridiculous thought," Islas said. "Which is exactly why I knew I had to do it. My family needed it."
Islas lost her grandmother in October 2025 and her grandfather six months later in May 2026.
"In the midst of our grief, I remember reflecting on all we had been through," she said. "I felt that a celebration was in order, to lift our spirits."
Videos of the birthday party that Islas posted to TikTok have more than 1 million views
combined and show just how elaborate the party was, including an emcee and a huge pink tent.
"I love how much dedication was placed into this celebration!" one commenter wrote. And another: "It's giving Beverly Hills Chihuahua."
Other comments that "Mexicans find any excuse to celebrate" were both "hilarious and accurate," Islas said.
"I’m very proud of my Mexican culture and being with family, showing gratitude for life through celebration, music and good food," Islas said. "It was the healing me and my family needed. Chanel’s quinceañera was a reminder to celebrate the little things, focus on what makes you happy, and to treasure the ones you love."
Dog party meets quinceañera
Chanel's quinceañera took place in the family's backyard, with everyone pitching in to set up and decorate, including inflating bone balloons, creating elegant centerpieces and putting up a draped canopy tent, framed pictures of Chanel at the entrance, and a toy carriage in which the pup posed for photos. The party's invitations were customized in the shape of a dog bone. A local taquero catered the event, while Islas' mom, tías and cousins made rice, pastas, salsas and desserts.
"I enjoy party planning as a hobby, so it was really fun to combine the elements of a dog party with the elements of a traditional quinceañera," Islas said. "A very extra party for a very extra dog!"
The quinceañera had live music with Islas' dad's band, Tropical Kaoba from Denver, serenading guests with classic cumbias. Islas' dad also served as the master of ceremonies that night, announcing Chanel’s entrance and leading guests through traditions such as the quinceañera crowning, presenting her “last toy” and dancing a waltz.
'Party of the year'
The human guests aren't the only ones who had a blast. Chanel also had the time of her life, with all attention on her and best friend Pluto − Islas' sister's 3-year-old chihuahua − as her chambelan, or escort. However, the pup did not compromise on her rest, taking multiple naps throughout the party before finishing the night with a slice of her bone-shaped cake from a local dog bakery.
"We danced, we sang, we ate. It has been described by some as the party of the year," Islas said. "My favorite part was sitting back and relaxing at the end of the night (as) I looked around and reflected on how much effort was put into this event. I watched as our guests laughed and enjoyed themselves."
More than 80 people attended Chanel's quinceañera, with Islas recalling how she was in awe of the number of people who showed up and joined the festivities, which became so noisy that neighbors called in the cops.
But even the police thought the party was "cool" and even "joked about joining in on the fun," Islas said.
Party's not over
The party's not over yet because Islas is planning another quinceañera for her pet when she turns 15, along with many more celebrations in between.
"I’m always finding fun and creative ways to spoil Chanel − which is in part why I have decided to keep up with her social media presence," Islas said. "It brings me joy, and I want to share that with the world."
She also encourages everyone to "celebrate life for any and every reason."
"The world can feel dark at times, but it’s important to lean on the ones you love and find light in the darkness," Islas said, adding how she was overwhelmed by the love and support she and Chanel received on their TikTok videos.
Islas literally 'manifested' Chanel
Islas says Chanel found her "exactly when I needed her the most," in July 2024. Though a chihuahua − particularly one in pink dresses − had always been on her mood board, she wasn't sure if she would get another dog after the death of her childhood dog Pepsi, who died in January 2024 at the age of 16.
Islas says she "distinctly remembers" having a conversation with a family member who asked her if she would ever get another dog, to which she replied: “I’m not actively looking for one, but if a tan-colored chihuahua finds me then I’ll know it’s meant to be.”
Two days later Chanel walked into Islas' life.
"A woman on the side of the road was giving away chihuahua puppies," Islas said. "Chanel was the runt of the litter, and we immediately fell in love with her. I feel like I manifested her into my life."
Islas described Chanel as her soul dog, with the same "fierce personality" as she has.
"Chanel is my best friend, my companion, and truly the light of my life," Islas said. "She is intelligent, bold, and I could not imagine a life without her."
