The stock market will also be closed.The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, and by 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday celebrates
"the social and economic achievements of American workers" and is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday "to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being."

This year, Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, with Labor Day weekend running from Sept. 5 to Monday, Sept. 7.
Are banks, post offices, UPS and FedEx open on Labor Day? Will mail be delivered?
- Labor Day is a U.S. Postal Service holiday, according to the agency's website, meaning mail will not be delivered and post offices will be closed for retail transactions on Sept. 7.
- UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will not be available on Labor Day. UPS Store locations may be closed, according the company's website, and FedEx Office hours will also be modified.
- Since it is a federal holiday, most bank branches will be closed on Labor Day. Consumers should check with their local bank branch for specific holiday hours. ATMs and online banking remain available; however, transactions or deposits may not process until the next business day.
Is the stock market open on Labor Day?
U.S. stock markets will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will be closed Monday and reopen Tuesday, Sept. 8. The U.S. bond market will also be closed on Sept. 7, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Are grocery stores open on Labor Day?
Most grocery chains will be open on Labor Day, although some may have limited hours of operation.
Kroger says on its website that its stores will be open regular hours; however, pharmacy and clinic hours may vary. Other chains, such as Walmart, Publix, Trader Joe's, and Meijer, among others, have traditionally been open on Labor Day.
In terms of wholesale clubs, Sam's Club warehouses will open at 8 a.m. for Plus members and 9 a.m. for Club members, and will close at 8 p.m., according to the company's website. BJ's warehouses will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the Fourth of July, the company says on its website.
Costco warehouses will be closed on Labor Day, according to the company's website.

Most restaurant chains will remain open on Labor Day, including McDonald's, Starbucks, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin and Wendy's, among others.
