The Tennessee Volunteers are taking on the Kentucky Wildcats this weekend at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., and Vols fans couldn’t be more excited. Not only is this bound to be an exciting game, but it’s also the annual homecoming game for Tennessee fans.
Throughout the whole week, Tennessee fans have been decked out in orange and white, celebrating their alma mater all around Knoxville. I’m planning on attending the game this weekend, but before I go, I needed some of the top tips for tailgating at Neyland from University of Tennessee alumni, Grace Doherty.
“Homecoming is a great time to go…campus will be fun and special. If you’re around the Friday night before the game, there is usually a parade that’s always a spectacle,” she told USA
TODAY.
I’ve attended football games before, but I’ve never been to one down south during a homecoming, which I know is a totally different ballgame.
Doherty told me the inside scoop on where to tailgate, when to go, and where (and what) to watch while you’re there. If you’re hoping to attend the game this weekend, here are some of the best things to do and things to know before you go.
Plus, college football fans can now enter the Nutrl x Bussin with the Boys sweepstakes where they can enter to win a $200 gift card, tailgate pack and the Ultimate Tailgate Experience in Las Vegas.

Where to tailgate at Neyland Stadium
- If you don’t have your own tailgate set up then Doherty recommends walking around Circle Park. The UT alum said the park is fun to walk around and more likely than not that the friendly people will invite you to enjoy their tailgate, but it's not a guarantee.
- Why party on land when you can party on boat? Doherty recommends checking out Vol Navy, a game day tradition where fans party on the water before walking on foot up to Neyland Stadium. Traditions include sounding boat horns and train whistles when the Vols score.
- Since it’s homecoming weekend, Doherty said there traditionally is a homecoming tailgate thrown at 21st Mortgage Plaza which is outside the Student Union. The tailgate is open to everyone but is ticketed so make sure to check before you attend.

Tips for tailgating and watching the game
According to Doherty:
- It’s always best to know someone with a tent in circle park since they are purchased plots.
- The earlier you are to the game, the better. It will take a long time to get into the stadium no matter what.
- If you plan on watching the game rather than going, it’s best to get there 1-2 hours before kickoff.
