After a dominant 9-0 win in Game 1 of the American League wild card series, the New York Yankees have the opportunity to eliminate their rival Boston Red Sox from the MLB playoffs for the second year in a row.
Likely Cy Young Cam Schlittler was lights out at Yankee Stadium and Ben Rice hit two home runs, including a back-breaking grand slam in the eighth inning in front of a raucous crowd.
"You could feel that energy, it was electric and so many guys played so well, you enjoy it for a minute," Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters after the win.
"But it's getting right back after it tomorrow knowing that we'll have a chance to close it out ... It's one win. So we've got the blinders on. But it's a confident group in knowing that we can, if
we play our game we can beat anyone.
Lefty Max Fried will start for the Yankees and Sonny Gray goes for the Red Sox trying to stave off elimination. The winner of this best-of-three series advances to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Division Series.
