Toyota is recalling over 105,000 vehiclesdue to a fuel leak that could cause vehicles to catch on fire.
The company recalled 105,794 vehicles manufactured between 2024 and 2027 on Oct. 14 via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.
According to Toyota, the vehicles have a faulty fuel tube connection near the fuel tank that may disconnect and leak fuel. A fuel leak paired with an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire, the car manufacturer said.
Toyota said that as of early October, there have been 23 Toyota Field Technical Reports and 64 warranty claims in the U.S. that may be connected to this issue.
When USA TODAY contacted Toyota on Oct. 21 to find out if there have been any injuries related to the recall,
the company declined to comment.
Here’s what we know about the recall.
Which vehicles are included in the Toyota recall?
According to the NHTSA, the recall includes the following model:
- 2024-2027 Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid
Here’s the breakdown:
- 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser – 25,041 vehicles
- 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser – 41,955 vehicles
- 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser – 21,274 vehicles
- 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser – 17,524 vehicles
What’s the issue?
The recalled vehicles were built with a resin fuel tube that connects to a metal fuel tube. Together, these tubes and the connector that links them deliver fuel from the fuel tank to the engine, Toyota said.
The connectors linking the fuel tubes can lift and disconnect, causing fuel to leak, Toyota said. If fuel leaks, the engine in the hybrid system shuts off. A fuel leak, paired with an ignition source, could increase the likelihood of a fire, Toyota said.
Toyota first began receiving field reports of fuel leaks in mid-July 2024. As part of its investigation, the company inspected at least 600 vehicles and also conducted vibration and pressure tests.
What should car owners do?
The company said it will get dealers to inspect the connection and install a supplemental clamp to prevent it from disconnecting again. If needed, the dealers will replace the resin fuel tube and install the clamp.
Toyota will notify drivers about the fix between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13.
The NHTSA’s number for the recall is 26V673. Toyota’s number for the recall is 26TB23/26TA23.
