Tiffany Haddish has reached a plea deal in her years-old DUI case.
The comedian, 46, pleaded guilty to one count of DUI alcohol-less safe in a Fayette County, Georgia court Aug. 11, avoiding trial and several additional charges relating to her 2022 arrest for driving under the influence.
She was sentenced to 12 months of probation and community service and lost her driving privileges in Georgia. Haddish must also abstain from drugs and alcohol, submit to drug testing over the next year, complete a substance abuse evaluation within two months of sentencing and attend DUI school within four months.
The "Girls Trip" star was credited for the time she served in jail following her arrest.
During the hearing, Haddish's attorney said she is "taking this
very seriously" and has been "very vocal about her journey and sobriety."
In April 2024, the "Haunted Mansion" actress opened up about her lifestyle changes, telling People that she was "very sober" and hadn't had "a drink" since her second DUI arrest in November 2023.
"When I sit back and look at my life, everything that's crazy that's happened is because somebody or myself had alcohol in their system," she said at the time. "This is my challenge to people. Stop drinking for six months and just see how your life changes."
Why was Tiffany Haddish arrested?
In the early hours of Jan. 14, 2022, police responded to a call of a person who appeared to be asleep at the wheel of a white Ford Explorer in an Atlanta suburb. An officer then stopped Haddish as she pulled into the yard of a residence driving a vehicle matching the caller's description, Assistant Police Chief Matt Myers previously said in a statement.
Haddish was taken into custody and was released on $1,666 bond shortly after. She was later charged with seven counts, including driving under the influence of multiple substances, DUI drugs, DUI alcohol-less safe and improper stopping on a roadway, according to court records reviewed by USA TODAY.
In May, the New York Times bestseller's lawyers requested the case be dismissed, arguing that waiting over four years to resolve the matter in court caused personal and professional difficulties and violated Haddish's right to a speedy trial. However, a judge rejected the motion.
In November 2023, Haddish was arrested again on suspicion of driving under the influence in Beverly Hills, California, after someone called at around 5:45 a.m. about a vehicle stopped on Beverly Drive with an unresponsive person inside.
Haddish reached a plea deal in the case in February 2024, pleading no contest to a vehicle code violation. Her other misdemeanor DUI charges were dropped, the Los Angeles Times reported at the time.
