Dispatch audio from Miami emergency responders at the home of blogger Perez Hilton reveal details of the podcaster's purported self-harm.
USA TODAY reviewed hours of audio from Miami-Dade County dispatchers who warned the man was possibly armed and needed treatment for his injuries.
The first calls to 911 came in before 7 p.m., after the 48-year-old celebrity blogger was seen harming himself on a TikTok livestream.
Dispatchers sent emergency responders to the star’s home Tuesday night in the Westchester neighborhood of Miami, about 10 miles west of downtown. They responded with “basic life support,” which
generally is a tier below “advanced life support” for 911 emergencies such as heart attacks.
The call was labeled a “possible suicide,” and sheriff’s deputies ulitmately had responders wait nearby, then enter the house hours later to take Hilton to the hospital.
"In many incidents involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis or actively harming themselves, deputies prioritize de-escalation by creating time, distance, and opportunities for communication," Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office wrote in a statement.
Dispatch audio shows the call lasted for nearly four hours and responders went back to the home shortly before 11 p.m.
Around 10:40 p.m. emergency staff were again sent to the home, and around 11 p.m. reported working alongside police to enter and tend to Hilton.
Hilton’s family released a statement Aug. 5 that he was receiving medical care after the incident.
"Many of you have reached out with concern for Perez, and we are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers," the family wrote on Wednesday, Aug. 5. "We can confirm that Perez is receiving medical care, and our family's focus right now is on his well-being."
