San Clemente football coach Jaime Ortiz said several players' families were being evacuated as the fire spread through the area. Homes belonging to families with students attending San Clemente and JSerra also were endangered, prompting warnings for those in affected areas to take cover.
The fire forced the cancellation of the highly anticipated football game between San Clemente (7-0) and Mission Viejo (6-1), as well as Capistrano Valley Christian vs. Village Christian, according to Los Angeles Times high school sports columnist Eric Sondheimer.
Meanwhile, another vegetation fire broke out along Interstate 5 near San Onofre, prompting the closure of northbound and southbound lanes between Vandergrift Boulevard and Basilone Road, Cal Fire said.
The fires erupted as fierce Santa Ana winds heightened fire danger across Southern California, stretching from Malibu to Camp Pendleton.
