Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's eldest son no longer shares his father's last name.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge granted the legal name change of Maddox Chivan Jolie, formerly Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt, on Monday, Sept. 14, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY. The 25-year-old initially filed to drop Pitt in May, listing the reason as "personal."
Maddox Chivan Jolie – who is one of the famous former couple's six children, along with Pax, 22; Zahara, 21; Shiloh, 20; and twins Vivienne and Knox, 18 – is not the first of his siblings to remove Pitt from their surname in recent years.

In August 2024, Shiloh officially became Shiloh Jolie, three months after submitting her request to the court on her 18th birthday.
Around that same time,
Vivienne Jolie-Pitt was credited as Vivienne Jolie for her work as an assistant on Angelina Jolie's buzzy Broadway musical "The Outsiders." She has since taken action to make it legal, filing a petition to change her last name in July.
Later in 2024, Zahara introduced herself with only the last name Jolie during an event for her sorority at Spelman College, according to a video posted by Essence. In June, she began the formal process to remove Pitt and has a hearing on Sept. 28, where a judge can approve the change if there is no objection from the public.
Maddox Jolie indicated he was planning to make the legal change earlier this year, when he dropped Pitt from his credit as an assistant director on his mom's movie "Couture," which marked the first time he publicly presented with a different name.
Angelina Jolie, 51, and Pitt, 62, have had plenty of their own legal back-and-forth as well. In September 2016, the "Maleficent" actress filed for divorce after two years of marriage and over a decade together.
The split launched a series of court battles, including separate proceedings over custody and control of their French vineyard Château Miraval. It was during their dispute over the winery that Jolie accused Pitt of attacking her and their kids while aboard a private jet for a family trip on Sept. 14, 2016, exactly 10 years before Maddox Jolie's name change was granted.
Angelina Jolie's divorce filing came just days after the alleged incident. Pitt denied the allegations, and the FBI declined to pursue an investigation or charges at the time.
The exes officially reached a divorce settlement in January 2025.
