"Today" show co-anchors Craig Melvin and Dylan Dreyer were stunned into silence when longtime correspondent Emilie Ikeda revealed she was pregnant on the air.
Ikeda, who filled in for Al Roker during the "3rd Hour of Today," dropped the bombshell as the group discussed their weekends.
"I feel like my weekend is best encapsulated in pictures. I think we maybe have some," Ikeda said, before showing a black and white still of her and her husband Pat showing off ultrasound pictures.
"Oh my god," Melvin exclaimed as Dreyer worked to wrap her head around what she saw. "You're having a baby."
"Wait," Dreyer said. "Wait, are you serious? Congratulations!"
"For those at home, they legitimately don't know. I'm surprising them right now," Ikeda explained to
viewers. Melvin and Dreyer took turns congratulating and embracing Ikeda shortly after the news broke.
Ikeda couldn't help but gush about her pregnancy, telling her fellow co-hosts that she was five months pregnant and is due in January. She added that the baby was the "size of a banana," according to People.
"Em, our control room just pointed out that Emilie Ikeda is about to have an a I-kiddo," Melvin said. "Roker's not here."
Ikeda then quipped: "Where's Al? Did Al call in from Italy to say this?"
Emilie Ikeda is 'bursting with gratitude'
Shortly after announcing her pregnancy on the air, Ikeda hard launched her pregnancy on Instagram, writing that she was "bursting with gratitude…"
"Praying for good health… And sharing with so much joy… that Baby is due in January," Ikeda wrote in the caption of the Aug. 31 post.
Ikeda also shared that she was feeling a lot better these days – now that she's out of her first trimester, People reported.
"I was very nauseous in my first trimester," Ikeda said. "Now in the second trimester [I’m feeling okay], but in the first I was absolutely miserable."
"I’m so excited and now I’m in the stage where I can feel the baby kicking, which is miraculous," she said. "I might be in a bad mood. I might be preoccupied. I might be into a script and then I feel this baby kick and I’m like, 'Oh, it’s my buddy.'"
Ikeda, who joked that she and her husband "are a little psychotic," revealed that the couple doesn’t plan on finding out the baby’s sex prior to giving birth.
She added: "It feels like the ultimate surprise."
