Colorado football coach Deion Sanders ended his weekly news conference in Boulder Tuesday, Sept. 15, by explaining why he appeared to be speaking in tongues after his team beat Weber State last week.
The moment was captured on video at the start of his Sept. 12 postgame news conference, creating some controversy
about what Sanders was doing when he chanted indecipherable words for 10 seconds before taking questions from reporters.Sanders brought it up Tuesday without being asked about it. He noted he needed to calm down Saturday after his team beat Weber State 52-21 but didn’t perform as well as he wanted.
“I had just come from addressing the team, and I lit them up, so I had to calm down,” Sanders said. “And the only way I know how to calm down is
to pray in the spirit. So, you know, it’s not a gimmick. There’s not a ‘look at me.’ No. No. That’s real.”

Sanders, 59, says he’s done this before, such as when he has prepared to undergo surgeries.
“That’s what I do,” Sanders said. “And I’ve done that everywhere I’ve been. And we’ve got evidence. So there’s no game. There’s no gimmick. I love the Lord with all my heart, and I’m not scared to speak it in front of anybody, anywhere, at any time. But it’s not a planned type of thing.”
Sanders is in his fourth season at Colorado and is 2-0 heading into a game at Northwestern Sept. 19.
