A Pennsylvania State Police helicopter and a small airplane collided in midair and crashed on the evening of Aug. 19, officials said.
The incident involved a Cessna 150 airplane and Bell 407 helicopter, which had two people on board, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The number of people aboard the plane was not immediately known.
The crash occurred at around 7:50 p.m. local time near an airport in Carlisle, a community about 120 miles northwest of Philadelphia, the FAA said.
"Just a heartbreaking scene unfolding tonight at Carlisle Airport involving a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter," Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity said in a statement. "My thoughts
and prayers are with everyone involved, their families, and the first responders on the scene. Hoping for the best possible outcome in what is clearly a very serious situation."
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he had been briefed on the incident and was heading to the scene. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
This is a developing story.
