Tennessee fans pulled off the extraordinary. They made field-stormings lame.
So lame, I’m wondering if maybe I’m starting to get sick of college football field-stormings.
What used to be reserved for moments of pure joy has morphed into an excuse for performative content creation.
Tennessee fans “rushed” the field after beating Alabama, 26-10, although calling it a “rush” or a “storming” would be like saying that Australian woman who flailed around in the 2024 Olympics was “breakdancing.”
What we saw at Tennessee last weekend was a less of a field rush and more of a field trip, as fans meandered onto the field to take selfies and smoke cigars.
This became the lamest field-storming since, well, last month, when Michigan fans rushed the field after
beating Western Michigan. At least that one included some last-second theatrics.
No theatrics in this one. Alabama fans started heading for the exits with five minutes left on the clock.
When the clock hit 0:00 after Tennessee’s dominating victory, fans initially remained in the stands, as if debating what to do.
To rush the field, or not to rush?
On one hand, Tennessee has now defeated rival Alabama in three of the past five years, including three consecutive triumphs at Neyland Stadium. So, this isn’t exactly new, and Alabama is not the thresher it used to be.
On the other hand, fans’ camera rolls and social media accounts aren’t going to populate themselves with videos and photos. Time for some fresh snaps!
Tennessee turn a field-storm into a field trip. Skip it next time
After several seconds of indecision, thousands of fans decided to climb the walls and descend onto the field for what’ll go down as one of the most half-hearted field-stormings of all time. The scene offered fresh evidence that many of life’s decisions are guided by whether people believe the videos and pics will look cool for TikTok and Insta.

A word to the Zoomers: If you must debate for several seconds whether a win is field-storming material, then it most certainly is not field-storming material.
Field-stormings are best served hot, when all rational thinking is put aside, and you succumb to your dopamine-induced lizard brain.
Or, as former Vols radio broadcaster John Ward once put it as fans stormed the field in 1998 after a rivalry win against Florida, when “Pandemonium reigns!”
That’s not what happened in this case.
This wasn’t pandemonium. It was just pandering to social media.
Even some Alabama fans made their way onto the turf as part of the field trip and started dancing on the field.

Folks, what's going on here?
We’re living in a TikTok-induced psyop.
Did I suddenly become that geezer shaking his fist at the sky? Or, did field-stormings suddenly start getting a whole lot lamer?
Tennessee's 2022 field rush was iconic. This one, a lame imitation
Let me back up for a moment and say: I’m not a field-storming hater. At least, I never used to be.
They’re hazardous endeavors, but, in the right dosage, they’re also incredible theater, terrific marketing, and one of the delightful differences between college football and the NFL.
An ol’-fashioned field rush provides the rarest of opportunities for unadulterated jubilation.
Virginia fans storming the field after taking down Florida State … this is what college football is all about pic.twitter.com/fCMvZ0ViFh

I can appreciate how Virginia fans must have felt last year when they toppled Florida State in double overtime, defeating what was then an undefeated opponent ranked in the top 10. No sooner did the Cavaliers clinch the victory with a fourth-down interception than Virginia fans stampeded onto the turf in a blur of boat shoes.
Dangerous? Yes. But, also, unforgettably euphoric, by the looks of it.
I look at field-stormings sort of like cliff jumping. Both activities carry risk, but they’re a rush of adrenaline. I begrudge no one for wanting to experience that thrill a time or two in their lifetimes.
Four years ago, Tennessee served one of the most iconic scenes of fan ecstasy in sports history when success-starved Vols fans cascaded onto the field and smoked cigars to celebrate a last-second win as the program snapped a 15-year losing streak to Alabama.
I covered that game in 2022 and inched my way through the mass of fans to reach the postgame interview room. Believe me when I tell you I witnessed what unbridled euphoria looks like that night on Shields-Watkins Field.

Revelers toppled the goal posts, and men and women across multiple generations smoked celebratory cigars, some lighting up for the first time in their lives. Some Vols fans would rank that night among the greatest moments of their lives.
That was a Hall of Fame field-storming, worthy of the moment.
Four years later, this became a lousy imitation. I’d call it a cheap imitation, except this field rush cost Tennessee a $500,000 fine that’ll be directed into Alabama’s pockets, per SEC rules.
Sure, you could call it a field-storming in the photos posted on the ’gram, but no amount of social media filters will put this on par with 2022.
That was a scene of blissful abandon.
This was just FOMO and a plodding field trip.
