NEW YORK — The US Open is paying tribute to the victims of 9/11 with several special ceremonies before the men's semifinal match between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe.
Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the semifinals are being held, will feature a light show, "Tribute in Light," that will glow in light blue from dusk until dawn. That light show honors the nearly 3,000 lives that were lost that day in attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Throughout the grounds of the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, "Never Forget" and "9/11/01" are displayed on the LED Screens and inside the stadium, with American flags flown at half-mast.
Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major MaryKay Messenger, who served at West Point at the time of the attacks,
performed the national anthem before the semifinal match between Alexander Zverev and Karen Khachanov.
Pop singer JoJowill sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" before the Shelton-Tiafoe match, with colors presented by the NYPD Color Guard and the FDNY Honor Guard.
