Police in Birmingham, Alabama, have made an arrest following a shooting on Saturday, Oct. 31, after the "Magic City Classic" college football game between Alabama State and Alabama A&M.
Per reports, the shooting left one dead and eight others injured. It occurred after the conclusion of the Alabama A&M-Alabama State game, shortly after 7:50 p.m. local time. Birmingham Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman confirmed one person had been detained and transported to police headquarters for questioning, adding that police found and secured multiple weapons.
The "Magic City
Classic" is an annual football rivalry between the Hornets and Bulldogs, one of the biggest rivalries among historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
Police have not yet released details or motives in regard to the shooting.
Birmingham mayor Randall Woodfin released a statement Saturday night:
"Our community is hurt, shaken and rightfully angry. So am I.
"There is no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration. But hear me clearly: We refuse to let fear shake the spirit of this community. Justice will be served to those who brought harm to those at one of our most treasured events.
"The Magic City Classic is rooted in HBCU tradition, and at the heart of those traditions is family. Tonight, as a family, we grieve. We wrap our arms around neighbors who are dealing with unimaginable pain right now. And just like family, we will stand united as we overcome this tragic night.
"While this crime is under an active investigation, we will not let up until we achieve swift justice for this senseless violence."
