President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video Aug. 30 depicting Iran's Kharg Island being "blown to smithereens," thrusting one of the country's most important oil facilities back into the spotlight. The island was not targeted in the latest U.S. strikes on Iran, but its outsized role in the global energy market has left many asking: What is Kharg Island, and why is it so important?
Located in the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island has long served as Iran's oil export hub, handling about 90% of the country's crude exports before the war. While recent U.S. attacks targeted Larak Island, not Kharg, any disruption to the island's infrastructure could have major consequences for Iran's economy and global oil markets.
Where is Kharg Island located?
Before the war, roughly 90% of Iran's
crude oil exports flowed through Kharg Island, making it the country's most important oil hub. Those exports have been disrupted by a U.S. blockade on Iranian ports.
The island sits in the northern Persian Gulf, about 16 miles off Iran's coast and about 300 miles from the Strait of Hormuz, the strategically vital shipping corridor between Iran, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
Kharg Island has remained a flashpoint throughout the conflict. Hamid Bovard, chief executive of the state-run National Iranian Oil Company, dismissed Trump's recent social media posts as "laughable" and said conditions on the island remained calm, according to Reuters.
Trump also previously put Kharg in the spotlight. On June 11, he announced his intentions to take over the island before later saying a threatened U.S. military operation there was off the table. The comments came just days before Tehran and Washington signed an interim agreement on June 17 aimed at ending the war.
Why is Kharg Island important?
Before the war, about 90% of the country's crude oil exports moved through Kharg Island, making it one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in Iran's economy. Millions of barrels of oil are stored there, and pipelines from some of Iran's biggest oil fields feed directly into its export terminals.
That's why Kharg matters far beyond Iran. The country produces more than 3 million barrels of oil a day, so any serious disruption at the island could affect global oil supplies and send energy prices higher around the world.
The island has also become a frequent flashpoint in the conflict. In March, U.S. forces struck military targets on Kharg, prompting Trump to claim American forces had "obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran's crown jewel, Kharg Island." Even so, the island's vital oil infrastructure remained intact.
For months, military and political leaders have viewed Kharg as one of Iran's most valuable strategic assets. Before the March strikes, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid argued that targeting the island's oil facilities could "cripple Iran's economy and topple the regime," highlighting just how central Kharg is to Iran's economic power and influence in the region.
