WalletHub, a personal finance company, recently named Las Vegas the eighth-best food city in the United States.

The designation may not surprise those who have dined in Southern Nevada's urban hub. The city's largest industry is hospitality, and with it comes world-class dining.

From the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace and the Golden Steer Steakhouse to Las Vegas' surprising number of vegan options, fine dining experiences, and worker-friendly cafés, Las Vegas offers not only high-quality food but also a wide range of choices.

However, WalletHub didn't look at restaurant options alone when creating the ranking.

"The top cities cater not just to people who enjoy dining out, but also to foodies who enjoy putting their own skills to the test by

exploring new flavors in their own kitchens," Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, said about the ranking. "In addition, these cities make delicious dining affordable for residents and visitors alike."

The personal finance company used data from government agencies like the U.S. Census Bureau, non-profits like the Council for Community and Economic Research, Federation of Tax Administrators and Tax Foundation, travel companies like TripAdvisor and Yelp, and others to determine the affordability and the diversity, accessibility, and quality of the food in 182 different U.S. cities.

Here's a closer look at the study and how Las Vegas did.

Is Las Vegas a good food city?

According to WalletHub, Las Vegas is among the country's best food cities. The Southern Nevada city ranked No. 8 out of 182 cities in WalletHub's ranking.

Las Vegas ranked much higher in the diversity, accessibility, and quality category (No. 9) than it did in the affordability category (No. 77).

WalletHub determined the diversity, accessibility, and quality category using factors such as the number of restaurants per capita (which Las Vegas tied for No. 1 with Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh), the ratio of full-service restaurants to fast-food establishments, and access to healthy food options, among others.

Affordability was determined primarily by the cost of groceries and the price of a restaurant meal.
