Argentina’s veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi has officially announced his retirement from international soccer, bringing an end to a career that saw him represent his country in four World Cup tournaments.
At 38, Otamendi leaves behind an international resume that includes 139 appearances for Argentina since his 2009 debut. Throughout his career, he played a pivotal role in some of the national team’s greatest achievements.
Otamendi was instrumental in Argentina’s triumphant 2022 World Cup run, helping secure the country’s third World Cup title. He also contributed to the team's victories in the Copa América in both 2021 and 2024.
"Today I find myself writing the hardest words of my entire career," Otamendi wrote on Instagram. “I bid farewell
to the Argentina national team, but I am immensely proud to have represented my country. Whilst titles go down in history, the love for these colors lasts a lifetime."
Otamendi went on to thank the fans for their support throughout his journey. "Thank you, Argentina. Thank you for letting me fulfill my dream of becoming a world champion and of wearing the most beautiful shirt in the world," he added.
Outside of international play, Otamendi had a 16-year career in Europe, including stints with FC Porto, Valencia, Manchester City, and Benfica. During his time overseas, he captured 21 major titles, including nine with Manchester City between 2015 and 2020.
Otamendi currently plays for River Plate in Argentina, having signed with the club earlier this year after leaving Benfica as a free agent. His contract with River Plate runs through 2027.
