Ever since Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to their first NBA championship in 53 years, the basketball star has made no secret of his next ambition: appearing on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" alongside his pal and devoted Knicks supporter Mariska Hargitay.
Asked what he wanted to do after winning the NBA title in June, a champagne-soaked Brunson
had a quick, hilarious answer: "Try to get on 'SVU.'"The wish has come true for the 2026 NBA Finals MVP, who also hosted the season premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on Sept. 26. On "SVU," Brunson plays a detective helping his old friend, Hargitay's Capt. Olivia Benson, in a scene airing during the Thursday, Nov. 5 episode, "Forsaken" (9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC).
Here's what to know about Brunson's
"SVU" appearance.
Jalen Brunson was spotted on the 'Law & Order: SVU' set in September
Brunson's unnannounced role was hardly a secret. Paparazzi photographed the Knicks star filming with Hargitay in Brooklyn on Sept. 16, and TMZ caught Brunson leaving the set carrying his daughter, Jordyn.
NBC confirmed the guest appearance the following day, with the show's Instagram account declaring, "When the plans finally make it out of the group chat."
On Sept. 18, the official "Law & Order" account shared a photo of Brunson and Hargitay on the restaurant set with the caption, "Two iconic New York Captains walk onto a set…"
Madison Square Garden star Jalen Brunson plays Detective Madison on 'SVU.' Get it?
Hey Knicks fans. Harmless, semi-spoilers explaining Brunson's 50-second 'SVU' appearance below. We have to say it.
The NBA star makes his appearance about 20 minutes into the episode, as Benson investigates a wealthy stepfather who might be covering up a crime involving his own stepdaughter, whose sealed criminal record includes a DWI and resisting arrest.
Benson tracks down the officer involved in the earlier incident, Detective Jay Madison, played by one of Madison Square Garden's brightest stars: Brunson.
Madison is off duty and working his way through an entire pizza at an upscale diner when Benson finds him. She congratulates the fellow detective on his promotion.
"Focus on my goals, give 110 percent, things worked out," Madison says, sounding suspiciously like an NBA Finals MVP describing his championship season.
Madison confirms that stepdad Rick was a big pain during the earlier encounter, when he blew a 0.25 blood alcohol concentration and still gave argy-bargy to the officers. His scarily entitled son Tyler in the car began yelling at Madison, too.
Madison took a pocketknife from Tyler, but a "legal gray area" prevented the detective from seizing another item in the boy's possession – a potentially significant clue for Benson's investigation.
"Thanks, Jay. You're the best," Benson says as she departs, sounding suspiciously like a Hollywood star giving some love to her NBA superstar pal. Benson declines Madison's kind offer of pizza, she's already on the phone.
And just like that, Brunson's "SVU" moment is over after about 50 seconds. Madison turns his attention back to that pizza.
Will 'SVU' have Det. Madison again?
Unlikely. It's presented as a "guest appearance" at the beginning of the show. And the case gets solved. Madison did his part for justice.
Jalen Brunson previously appeared with Mariska Hargitay at the Emmys
Brunson's finest acting performance with Hargitay might be his hilarious appearance in a prerecorded sketch opening the 78th Emmy Awards on Sept. 14. As Hargitay prepared to host TV's biggest night, the actress was shown steaming her gold dress while fretting about the pressure of performing before millions of viewers.
"Have you ever felt like you have millions of eyes on you and it all comes down to one night?" Hargitay asked.
The camera cut to Brunson casually steaming his blue No. 11 Knicks jersey. "Seriously?" the NBA champ replied, looking incredulous.
Hargitay insisted she didn't have anyone to "tap it in" for her – a reference to Knicks teammate OG Anunoby's game-winning tip-in during New York's historic 29-point comeback in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
With her opening number beginning, Hargitay rushed off, leaving Brunson standing with his jersey and steamer, looking thoroughly unimpressed.
