Flag football is growing rapidly in the United States and the world. The sport is often applauded as a safer alternative to tackle football and appreciated for its accessibility and inclusion of women and girls. According to the Premier Flag website, 20 million people play the sport globally and there are 4.1 million youth players in the U.S. There are 25 states, including Washington, D.C., that have sanctioned high school programs for girls flag football. This fall, officials in Texas voted to start a pilot program for girls flag football, which is a common step before official sanctioning.
The NFL has helped elevate the sport with each of the 32 teams sponsoring local flag football teams. The league also features stars of the sport such as Mexico's champion quarterback Diana Flores in promotional campaigns and utilizes NFL Honors to salute flag players via the Latino Youth Honors program and the NFL Flag Players of the Year award.
