Beach Boys frontman Mike Love has returned to the stage despite "serious health challenges" that have prompted doctors to urge him to "focus on his health," according to longtime guest performer John Stamos.
Stamos shared a statement
on Oct. 11, which also appeared on Love's Instagram account as a collaborative post, defending the Beach Boys cofounder following a performance that prompted health concerns from fans.Footage of 85-year-old Love gingerly being walked out on stage by Stamos for the band's performance at Cincinnati's PNC Pavilion on Oct. 10 quickly made the rounds of social media. A Rolling Stone headline described the singer as appearing "alarmingly frail."
Love, seated center stage with a microphone in front of his face, provided backing vocals as Stamos, guitarist Brian Eichenberger and other band members took the lead singing the set list. According to videos from the event, Love at times made hand gestures to the crowd, sending waves and a heart symbol.
Mike Love 'facing serious health challenges': John Stamos
As Stamos prepared to join the band for a concert the following day at Nashville's Ryman auditorium, he took to social media to explain why Love's continued presence on stage is so meaningful, calling it a "miracle."
"My beloved friend, father figure, musical hero and mentor, Mike Love, is facing serious health challenges. We hope he’ll be doing what he loves for years to come, but we don’t know what the future holds. We have tonight," he captioned an image of the two of them.
He continued: "Mike is a fighter. Despite doctors, family and friends urging him to focus on his health, he insists on being on stage. He says he needs his band, the audience, his friends and drummer surrounding him to lift him up."
Stamos added that after performing together for more than four decades, it affected him "deeply" to "see someone larger than life face something so human and fragile." He acknowledged that the "Mike Love we see tonight may not be exactly the Mike we’ve always known. But he’s still every bit the Mike we love."
Love, who officiated Stamos and Caitlin McHugh's wedding, "didn’t just give me a place in his band. He gave me a place in his life," Stamos wrote. As a frequent guest performer, Stamos has "felt entrusted with being a steward of this extraordinary music, carrying it to new generations."
Stamos vowed to be "completely present" during their Nashville concert, where he hoped to "watch age, illness and time disappear." He also admitted: "Maybe the hardest part of loving someone is becoming so accustomed to the miracle of having them there that you forget it’s a miracle at all."
"I want to cherish every second without feeling those seconds slipping away. That’s what I’m giving him," he wrote. "We don’t know what tomorrow brings. But we have tonight."
Beach Boys canceled multiple tour dates amid Mike Love's health issues
The Cincinnati and Nashville gigs took place after the band took a three-month hiatus, which Love described in a July 22 social media post as "a short break to recharge." Around 30 tour dates were impacted.
When it came time for the Beach Boys to return for a trio of performances from Sept. 24 to 27, those events were canceled "due to circumstances beyond [their] control," according to the venues.
A previously scheduled show at the Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, Illinois, on Oct. 9, was also canceled alongside a scheduled performance in Calgary, Canada, on Oct. 19. The band did not share any explanation for the cancellations.
In a June 15 Instagram post, Love described experiencing emotional and physical setbacks, including "ongoing recovery from what started out as bronchitis, followed by COVID."
Following cofounder Brian Wilson's death on June 11, 2025, and Bruce Johnston's exit in March after six decades with the group, Love is the only original member still touring with the California-born band as it celebrates the 60th anniversary of "Pet Sounds."
What's left on the Beach Boys' 2026 tour schedule is a Nov. 11 gig at the Walt Disney Resort in Florida and a Nov. 13 event at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Bristol, Virginia.
