Kankakee (IL) picked up a win on the field two weeks ago against Lincoln Way West, but now that win has been ruled null, and the program is on probation for the rest of the season.
According to a report from The Chicago Sun-Times, Kankakee forfeited its 28-14 win over Lincoln Way West on September 18 after self-reporting to the Illinois High School Association that it had used an ineligible player.
As a result, Lincoln Way West was awarded the win, and both teams are now 4-2 on the season.
“We recognize that eligibility mistakes can and do occur, and we appreciate Kankakee High School being forthcoming in not only reporting the violation but also presenting a plan to remedy this situation from occurring again in the future,” IHSA Executive Director
Craig Anderson said in a statement in the report. “The school’s football program was also placed on probation by the IHSA for the remainder of the season. Probation does not deny the school or program any IHSA privileges, but it does set the expectation that any further violations could result in more serious consequences.”
The Sun Times also received a statement from Kankakee athletic director Chris Pickett.
“We deemed a student ineligible and as a result we self-reported to the IHSA and are working in collaboration with them to make sure things like this don’t happen again,” Pickett's statement reads. “Our guys will continue to keep pushing on.”
Kankakee followed up the game with Lincoln Way West with a 42-0 win over Thornwood (IL). In their wins, the Kays have outscored opponents 139-27.
They'll return to the field on Friday as they host Bloom (IL) for a 6 p.m. CT kickoff. Lincoln Way East will also be at home on Friday, hosting Sandburg (IL) for a 7:30 p.m. CT kickoff.
