The first week of the high school football season did not disappoint. Headlined by a matchup between then-No. 2 and No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) and Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV), the third-ranked Gaels got the victory, putting on an early surge and then outlasting the Braves. With the win comes a shift in the USA TODAY Sports Super 25 national rankings.
Bishop Gorman gained a spot, but St. John Bosco's very strong second half prevented too steep a decline. Buford rose more than any other team following its win over a good Gainesville (GA) team and the transfer of Jalen Brewster, a defensive lineman who is arguably the top player in the country.
St. John Bosco and Brentwood Academy (TN) remained in the Super 25 despite suffering losses,
but four other teams lost and dropped out of the rankings altogether.
In steps a team from each of Florida, California, Texas and Illinois.
West Boca Raton (FL), which took down American Heritage (Plantation, FL) a week after taking Carol City (Miami, FL) to overtime in an exhibition game, is firmly situated in the top 20. Lower comes DeSoto, a Texas power whose running back SaRod Baker had an early contender for play of the year in a scrimmage on Saturday; Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), the defending California state champion; and East St. Louis (IL), which beat former Super 25 team Mt. Carmel (Chicago) in Week 1.
