A top staffer at the New York Times’ games section was fatally shot near a public park in California over the weekend and his in-laws are being held as suspects, according to police.
Jonathan McKinsey, head of engineering for the news outlet’s popular games section, was found dead on Saturday, Sept. 26, in a parking lot near the Dublin Sports Grounds, a public park in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Dublin, local police said. McKinsey, 40, was found with multiple gunshot wounds.
Dublin Police Services said McKinsey’s parents-in-law Shouyong Zhang, 77, and Shili Chen, 77, are suspected of murder in the case and were arrested. Zhang and Chen are married and are residents of the Alameda County city, police said.
"Officers found Jonathan McKinsey,
40, of Dublin, in the middle of the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds," Dublin police said in a statement. "With help from witnesses, within minutes, DPS officers located and detained two suspects who had remained nearby."
Police said no one else is suspected of being involved in the shooting.
A representative for McKinsey and lawyers for Zhang and Chen could not be immediately reached. A New York Times official declined to comment but confirmed McKinsey had been with the company since 2023, was based in the Bay Area and was the company’s director of engineering for games.
